Re:      Action Advisory: Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
            Reauthorization
Date:   March 22, 2010

ACTION ADVISORY

The House Education and Labor Committee, chaired by Congressman George Miller (CA), is accepting comments for the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (also know as No Child Left Behind) from stakeholders until Friday, March 26, 2010

AASCU encourages presidents, chancellors, and deans of schools of education to engage in this conversation and contact their members of Congress and Chairman Miller with constructive feedback and policy recommendations for ESEA reauthorization, particularly about teacher education and academic standards. President Howard plans to issue a statement to the House Education and Labor Committee prior to the deadline. While the Committee’s timeline for drafting reauthorization legislation is unclear, AASCU expects a proposal to reach the floor of Congress by the summer of 2010.

In order to assist you, AASCU has written this background paper about the history of ESEA, major issues to be addressed through reauthorization, and a brief analysis of what is at stake for public colleges and universities in the reauthorization.  Additionally, President Muriel Howard's letter to the Education and Labor Committee is attached for your review.
