Tell Congress About Your Museum's Economic Impact
[[Your Name]]
[[Your Address]]
The Honorable XXX XXXX
United States Senate/House
XXXX Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-4601
Dear Senator/Representative XXX:
I am writing today to share with you some information about the «Your Museum's Name»'s impact in our community.
Museums employ 400,000 Americans, spur economic growth by directly contributing $21 billion to the national economy each year and rank among the top three family vacation destinations. In fact, visitors to cultural and heritage destinations stay 53% longer and spend 36% more money than other kinds of tourists.
I would like to provide for you a Community and Economic Impact Statement for my institution, the «Your Museum's Name»:
- «Your Museum's Name» employs «Name of Zoo/Aquarium/Museum» people in our community;
- Each year, «Your Museum's Name» spends $«What is your museum/organization's annual budget?» on goods and services in our community;
- «Your Museum's Name» serves «How many visitors does your museum/organization serves each year?» visitors each year, including «What percent of those are out-of-town visitors? (provide an estimate)»% from out of town;
- «Your Museum's Name» serves «How many schoolchildren visit your museum/organization each year?» schoolchildren each year through school visits to museums;
- Admission fee: «What is your museum/organization's average admission fee?».
Please consider the economic impact that museums, zoos, and aquariums have on our community specifically when considering FY12 funding measures. Museums are in fact economic engines and a vital part of our nation's educational infrastructure, and will be critical in the economic recovery of cities and localities. As such, I urge you to oppose any effort to restrict the eligibility of museums, zoos and aquariums to compete for funds made available by the federal government.
I look forward to hearing your views on this issue.
Sincerely,
