I would like to extend my best wishes to you at beginning of the 116th Congress. As you prepare your legislative agenda for 2019, I hope that you will consider supporting the Peace Corps during the politically significant year to come.

As you may know the Peace Corps was founded during one of the hottest times of the Cold War by President John F. Kennedy. During these years, the people of the world faced the frighteningly real possibility of nuclear war as the USSR and NATO faced off in the struggle for global influence. The Peace Corps was established during this tumultuous time as a way to win hearts and minds by promoting world peace and friendship. In an increasingly interconnected world that faces challenges such as global pandemics, mass migration, and international terrorism, this mission remains more critical than ever over fifty-seven years after its founding.

The Peace Corps has been funded at $410 million since FY 2016. When adjusted for inflation, the agency is seeing its effective operating budget decrease by as much as $25 million. Meanwhile, applications to serve our nation in the Peace Corps from highly qualified Americans have soared and continued to outpace available positions. The result is that many prospective volunteers are unable to serve. As noted by retired general Stanley McChrystal, "This gap represents democratic energy wasted and a generation of patriotism needlessly squandered."

Although I understand that your schedule is demanding, hundreds of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will be advocating on Capitol Hill during our National Day of Action on February 28. Our community would relish an opportunity to share our concerns with you in person. I thank you for your time and consideration.
