I am writing to ask you to be a strong supporter of the Peace Corps.

Because Peace Corps funding has been relatively stagnant for the past four years, I urge you to request a ten percent increase in funding - to $450 million - in your personal appropriations request. I also ask you to sign onto a Peace Corps funding Dear Colleague letter that supports this financial adjustment when this letter is issued in the coming weeks.

A small and sometimes forgotten part of the Peace Corps community consists of volunteers who come home from their service with injuries or illnesses that are serious enough to be placed on short term or - occasionally - permanent disability. At roughly $450 a week, the rate of disability pay they receive is insufficient to live on. I ask you to be a strong supporter of emerging legislation to increase this compensation to honor the service these individuals provided to our country and allow them to live with dignity.

Another simple way to honor Peace Corps service is to pass legislation that will allow volunteers in the twilight of their life to have the Peace Corps logo available for placement in their death notices or at their gravesites. This use was not specified in the original Peace Corps Act, and as the first volunteers to serve our nation are now entering their 80s, it is time to correct this oversight. This legislation would have little if any cost to taxpayers, and would extend Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and former staff the same courtesy provided to military service members who also served their country abroad.
