Keep the Peace Corps Independent and Internationally Trusted

Last July, Senator Rick Scott of Florida introduced a bill that would strip the Peace Corps of its independence and make it subordinate to the State Department under the direction of the Secretary of State.  We hope you will join us in protecting the independent, non-political nature of the Peace Corps by opposing this legislation. The international perception of the Peace Corps' independence is imperative for its continued success which is based off of the mutual respect and trust of the host countries where our Volunteers serve.

The origins of Senator Scott's bill, S.2320, was his opposition to the 130 plus Peace Corps Volunteers teaching English in China. After the Peace Corps declined his request to withdraw from China, Senator Scott introduced this legislation that would force the agency to comply with his political viewpoint and lose its status as an independent entity. A letter signed by ten former Peace Corps directors opposing this legislation was sent to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in January, 2020.

Please join us in urging your senators to oppose S.2320. We encourage you to personalize your messages.
