Ask President Biden to Support Strong Peace Corps Budget in his Fiscal Year 2023 Budget

As Congress is finalizing a Fiscal Year 2022 spending package that extends flat funding for the Peace Corps for a seventh consecutive year, the Biden administration is preparing to deliver its Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) budget to Congress.

As you prepare to deliver your Fiscal Year 2023 budget request to Congress, please request no less than $450 million for the Peace Corps.

I am disappointed that you recommended, and Congress approved, flat funding ($410.5 million) for the Peace Corps in Fiscal Year 2022. That marks a seventh consecutive year of flat funding! When adjusted for inflation, the agency has lost more than $70 million in purchasing power during this period.

The Peace Corps is on the way back. As I write this letter, volunteers are weeks away from returning to service in Zambia and the Dominican Republic. At least twenty-two other nations have been approved to receive volunteers, using advanced safety and security protocols in the COVID-19 area. These volunteers will hopefully begin their service in the next few months, with assistance in addressing the pandemic a component of their work. Meanwhile, Peace Corps staff have been hard at work around the world, strengthening the Peace Corps in terms of programming, site placement, advancing inclusion and diversity of staff and volunteers, and much more.

A stronger Peace Corps requires a financial commitment to its mission. An eighth consecutive year of flat funding at this critical moment of renewal is not acceptable.

You noted in your inaugural address that during this critical period of global re-engagement, "We will not merely lead by the example of our power but by the power of our example." I believe the work of the Peace Corps and its volunteers over the past six decades represents this sentiment better than any other government entity.

I urge you to live up to those words with a robust funding request for the Peace Corps in Fiscal Year 2023.
