Last week, officials from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) visited the AmeriCorps agency. Since that visit, there has been an abrupt "demobilization" of AmeriCorps members working for the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).

There are also widespread reports that a large percentage of AmeriCorps agency staff have been put on administrative leave with pay. According to the group Voices for National Service, neither development has been verified by the AmeriCorps agency or the White House.

While there have not yet been reports impacting other AmeriCorps programs, there is concern recent developments could lead to the effective dismantling of this agency.

Support Strong Funding for the Peace Corps

In March, Congress agreed to pass a so-called "continuing resolution" which extended federal funding levels during the previous fiscal year (Fiscal Year 2024) to be applied for the current fiscal year (Fiscal Year 2025). This included level funding for the Peace Corps, at $430.5 million.

However, in late April or very early in May, President Trump is expected to present Congress with a "recissions" package – a series of proposed cuts to reduce current federal spending by billions of dollars. While international assistance and diplomatic programs are expected to be targeted for these cuts, it is unknown if current Peace Corps funding will be impacted.

Congress will also turn its attention to federal funding levels for the next fiscal year (FY 2026), which begins October 1st.

In these highly uncertain times, your voice is needed to make sure a strong and well-funded Peace Corps continues its operations.
