In 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced landmark health protections from methane pollution and associated toxic chemicals unnecessarily released during oil and gas production. The protections would prevent wasteful methane emissions and associated toxics linked to brain and spinal cord defects in babies and cancer in adults. However, instead of faithfully putting these protections in place, the agency delayed implementation, giving industry an additional year to continue polluting without meeting the new safeguards. The EPA is now signaling that this summer it will seek to erase these safeguards entirely.

Speak Out for National Parks and Public Lands

Last spring, a bipartisan group of Senators introduced the America the Beautiful Act, a bill that builds on the success of the 2020 Great American Outdoors Act by strengthening and reauthorizing the Legacy Restoration Fund–which expired in September 2025–to national parks and public lands. As America’s national parks see record-breaking numbers of visitors from across the globe, the Legacy Restoration Fund would provide $16 billion to address critical repair needs and deferred maintenance such as crumbling roads, decaying buildings, and outdated water systems.

To date, under the Great American Outdoors Act, the Legacy Restoration Fund has successfully addressed billions of dollars in deferred maintenance in national parks and public lands in all fifty states. But the challenge remains to address the full backlog of much-needed repairs to improve visitor safety and overall accessibility and enjoyment of our parks. By extending the Legacy Restoration Fund, the America the Beautiful Act is projected to support an additional 20,000 jobs annually and contribute $10 billion to local economies over the next five years on top of the robust economic boost of visitor tourism.

Call on Congress and the EPA to Protect Human Health and the Environment

Over the past year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has weakened, delayed, or revoked dozens of pollution protections, including standards on mercury, soot, and traffic pollution along with the reconsideration of a decade-old, evidence-based conclusion that carbon dioxide, methane, and four other climate-warming pollutants endanger human health and welfare.

These crucial protections and safeguards are the result of years of advocacy and commitment to defending the lives of our children and communities from harmful pollution and negative health outcomes including impaired brain development, low birth weight, asthma, and birth defects in newborns, as well as higher rates of dementia and cancer in adults.

While we have made incredible health and air quality gains in recent years, the EPA’s actions threaten to undo vital progress that has made America healthier. Our work is far from finished, and we will not rest until all God’s children are free from the burden of pollution and can reach their full God-given potential.
