Congress must protect NASA funding

The deadline for Congress to pass full-year appropriations is fast approaching. Congress will likely pass a stopgap measure called a Continuing Resolution (CR). Under a CR, agencies like NASA are typically funded at currently enacted levels to prevent interruptions while Congress finishes their work on the annual budget. But, the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) have proposed using any time under a CR to enact draconian cuts to NASA, cuts that Congress resoundly rejected in the draft budget they're working on. If OMB is successful, this could mean irreversible damage to NASA, thousands more people laid off, and over $12 billion worth of taxpayer-funded missions already flying shut off, never to return to service.

Future discoveries await if Congress acts

On September 10th, Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy announced that the agency's Perseverance Rover found evidence that is the "closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars." Scientists will need to examine these samples here on Earth before making a definitive claim that life once existed on Mars. However, the Administration's Office of Management & Budget is making moves to abandon the sample return campaign and more than 40 other projects effective October 1st. That is, unless Congress acts.

The House and Senate have each released budget bills that fully fund NASA in FY 2026, rejecting the OMB proposal and keeping NASA on track with its long-term strategic vision for space science. We must urge Congress to pass timely appropriations for NASA to prevent a gap in funding that could leave the next great scientific discoveries in the Martian dust.
