Current Actions http:https://www.congressweb.com/planetarysociety Thu, 18 Sep 2025 13:37:42 GMT Congress must protect NASA funding http:https://www.congressweb.com/planetarysociety/58 <div> <div>The deadline for Congress to pass full-year appropriations is fast approaching. Congress will likely pass a stopgap measure called a Continuing Resolution (CR). Under a CR, agencies like NASA are typically funded at currently enacted levels to prevent interruptions while Congress finishes their work on the annual budget.&nbsp; But, the Office of Management &amp; Budget (OMB) have proposed using any time under a CR to enact draconian cuts to NASA, <strong>cuts that Congress resoundly rejected in the draft budget they're working on</strong>.&nbsp;If OMB is successful, this could mean irreversible damage to NASA, thousands more people laid off, and over $12 billion worth of taxpayer-funded missions <em>already flying</em> shut off, never to return to service.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Congress has the ability to create clear guidelines for what level agencies should be funded at under a CR.&nbsp;<strong>Write to your elected officials and urge decisive action to&nbsp;protect NASA Science from unauthorized cuts.</strong></div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div><em>To complete this form, enter your street address and ZIP code below and click "Go" to generate the message for your House representative. Scientists will need to examine these samples here on Earth before making a definitive claim that life once existed on Mars.&nbsp; However, the Administration's Office of Management &amp; Budget is making moves to abandon the sample return campaign and more than 40 other projects effective October 1st. That is, unless Congress acts.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>The House and Senate have each released budget bills that fully fund NASA in FY 2026, rejecting the OMB proposal and keeping NASA on track with its long-term strategic vision for space science.&nbsp; We must urge Congress to pass timely appropriations for NASA to prevent a gap in funding that could leave the next great scientific discoveries in the Martian dust.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div><em>To complete this form, enter your street address and ZIP code below and click "Go" to generate the message for your House representative. But this is only the beginning. As Congress moves forward on these proposals, our elected officials must continue to hear from us to ensure that the final full-year budget for FY 2026 protects funding for NASA and the National Science Foundation.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div><em>To complete this form, enter your street address and ZIP code below and click "Go" to generate the message for your House representative. This is an extinction-level event for the Earth and space science communities, upending decades of work and tens of billions in taxpayers' investment. Send a message to Congress to reject these cuts and restore proper funding to NASA science.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div><em>To complete this form, enter your street address and ZIP code below and click "Go" to generate the message for your House representative.
